Keystone is pleased to announce our project, Houghton College’s Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex, Houghton, New York, was selected for Outstanding Design and publication in the Penton’s American School & University® 2016 Architectural Portfolio. The project was featured in the November 2016 edition of the magazine and also online at www.SchoolDesign.com. An annual competition honoring education design excellence, the Architectural Portfolio spotlights projects representing today’s most effective learning environments.
As Houghton College transitioned to NCAA Division III athletics, the College pursued the development of expanded athletic facilities. The expansion included artificial turf for the new softball and baseball stadiums and for the re-surfacing of the existing soccer stadium to a 5-sport facility and a 115,000 sf fieldhouse. Keystone provided project programming and planning; architectural design; survey; site development plans including artificial turf, landscape and water retention/drainage design; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering; plumbing, fire protection, heating and air conditioning design; electrical design; and construction administration and management.
A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. When determining citation winners and other outstanding designs, this year’s jury decided upon the following criteria: integration of technology, engaging landscapes, regional vernacularism, project-based learning, user-specific designs, sensitivity to context, accessibility, quality, diversity, inclusivity, living/learning communities, experiential learning, cohesive design concept, and environments that are evocative and inspirational.
